University of Kerala was founded as Travancore University in the former princely state of Travancore (now southern part of Kerala) and parts of the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu in 1937 during the last 7 decades since the University of Kerala grew and physically reduced and transformed in many ways. It is difficult to summarize what is ultimately the University of Kerala. The earliest origins of the University dates back to two institutions of modern learning in Kerala University, Trivandrum Thiruvananthapuram with the Observatory. University College was initially founded as the Maharaja of free school & rsquo by Maharaja Swathi Thirunal in 1834, with Mr. John Roberts. Missonary as a Christian priest and quickly became a university in 1866, affiliated to University of Madras. When he founded the Travancore University, the University departments of university chairs, only to turn around when the transformation of the University of Kerala happened in 1957, University College still retains its connection with the University as a University Affiliated . Trivandrum Observatory was founded in 1838 and was an internationally renowned scientist, John Caldecott FRS as its first director of the Museum. It was part of the Travancore University, but for a time was administered as an independent state institution. It is the oldest institution in the University of Kerala. University of Travancore was established in 1937 by a prevalence of Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Balarama Varma to the throne was also the first Chancellor of the University. Sir C. P Ramaswamy Ayyar, then Diwan (minister) of the State was the first Vice Chancellor. It was a exceptional condition. He said the government made an unsuccessful attempt to invite Albert Einstein to be Vice Chancellor first. The University was modeled after the best universities in the UK and even today retains some of these features. However high the University system evolved to be different from the university system in British universities.
