Tate is the world's largest collection of works by Turner. It is home to the Turner bequest, which includes 300 paintings and many thousands of sketches and watercolours (including 300 albums). Bequest, including all work left in Turner's Studio at his death in 1851, the year is the vast majority of the Turner collection at the Tate.
Paintings demonstrate the breadth of Turner's output in oils and contain a lot of famous works. They range from their early experiments in the environment, such as Moonlight, research on Millbank exhibited 1797, to large-scale exhibition pieces including Rome, from the Vatican, and later, more impressionistic work, such as the Blizzard-ship from the Harbour Mouth are exhibited in the year 1842.
Providing an understanding of the methods of Turner, drawings, watercolors and albums allow us to monitor the development of ideas of Turner and document their travels around the uk and Europe. In watercolor we see Turner grow from childhood (Foley bridge with towers Bacon 1787 for example) to a mature master, and one of Britain's greatest artists ever known, in works such as The Blue Rigi, Sunrise 1842.
Changing manifestations of Turner's work can be seen in the Clore Gallery and are available via the Clore Gallery entrance to the East building or by reference from the Clore Duveen Galleries.
