Shivaji University, established in 1962, named the great Maratha warrior and founder of the Maratha Empire International Airport Chhatrapati Shivaji. It was opened on November 18, 1962 Dr. Radhakrishnan, the then President of India. One of the main goals of the foundation of the university was to meet the regional needs of South Maharashtra. The jurisdiction of the University is spread over three districts viz. Kolhapur Sangli, and Satara with strength of about 3,00,000 students studying in 271 affiliated colleges and recognized institutes. This region of Maharashtra boasts of rich and varied socio cultural heritage. In the innovative and socially reformist leadership of Chhatrapati Shahu Maharaj, the princely ruler of Kolhapur, the city was at the beginning of this century, a focal point of educational opportunities for all classes and communities of South-Western Maharashtra, and northern parts of neighboring Karnataka. It is also the land of Karmaveer Bhaurao Patil, who struggled for his education to the masses innovative scheme 'earn and learn. When the University was founded by an act of Shivaji University in 1962, assigned to include accessibility of higher education opportunities for rural youth, conducting fundamental and applied research in science and humanities university for regional growth and development.
In 1962, the University started functioning with 34 Associates colleges and about 14000 students with 5 graduate departments on campus. Today the number of affiliated college has passed 225 and students strength to 2,00,000 with 34 graduate student offices on campus. University imparts education in 10 major faculty of arts, social science, science, commerce, education, fine arts, law, medicine, Ayurvedic medicine, engineering and technology.
During the initial two decades the efforts were concentrated on expansion of higher education and fund new colleges in different parts of the four districts under its jurisdiction. The University has strengthened its base in this phase, "taking education to the people." Decade of the 80s saw a significant expansion, especially the growth of professional faculties like engineering, education, management and medicine. The last stage of the University can be described as "a desire to learn." Since last 4-5 years, several attempts have been taken to overcome the image of the university as a regional university. Steps have been taken to improve the standard of teaching and research to measure by world standards. This is achieved by exploring new areas of higher education and research in the rapidly developing fields, such as industrial chemistry, space science, environmental science, bio-chemistry, silk, polymer chemistry, and computer science, in addition to the basic disciplines. Department of Physics, University UGC has recently been identified for special assistance programs and recognized as Department of Research Support. New areas of research in these departments are Super conductors of energy, biodiversity and bio-technology. The University has also established a university-industry interaction of cells in the three districts.
Faculty of Social Sciences and Arts is also prepared in accordance with the changes in time. Creating a Center for Women's Studies and extension activities through Adult and Continuing Education and Shramik Vidyapeeth are indicators of this change. The Department of Economics has been selected for UGC special assistance programs. Departments of sociology, education, geography, physics and economics offer special courses in emerging fields such as environmental science and works actively.
The University is a reward for merit, introducing a unique scheme called 'Shivaji University Merit Scholarship' offering 500 scholarships to deserving students in the associated colleges. It has also instituted research fellowships for Ph.D. students in the graduate school of the Department of the University. The University has made a budget provision of Rs. 45 Lakhs for these scholarships out of its own funds. This University can proudly claim that the first university in India to start such a scheme.
Efforts of the University to perfection acknowledges the significant subsidies received from financial institutions like UGC, DST, DBT, etc. Another indicator of the recognition of the university is working with the prime institutions in the country. Shivaji University has recently signed a memorandum of understanding with the Baba Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai for research in materials science. She also joined hands with Indian Institute of Geo-Magnetism, Mumbai and industries like Phyto-Pharma.
