Savitribai Phule Pune University, one of the best universities in India, is located in the north-western part of Pune city. It occupies an area of about 411 hectares. It was established on February 10, 1949 under the Poona University Act. The University has 46 academic environment. It is popularly known as the Oxford of the East. It has about 307 recognized research institutes and 612 affiliated colleges offering graduate and under-graduate courses.
The University attracts many foreign students due to its excellent facilities. It offers good accommodation. There is a provision of hostel for the students. There is a large library with lots of books on various topics. The University offers various scholarships to students. The University conducts seminars and conferences for elevene.Savitribai Phule Pune University (formerly known as University of Poona) was established under the Poona University Act, passed Bombay legislature on February 10 1948 In the same year, Dr. MR Jayakar assumed office as the first principal of the University.
Shri BGKher, Chief Minister and Education Minister, Govt. in Bombay, took a keen interest in setting apart a beautiful campus for the University. As a result of his efforts, a campus extending over 411 acres assigned University in the early 1950.
Originally the university a jurisdiction extending over 12 districts of western Maharashtra. But with the establishment of Shivaji University Kolhapur was, in 1964 the university restricted to 5 districts, namely Pune, Ahmednagar, Nasik, Dhule and Jalgaon. Of these, two districts - Dhule and Jalgaon related to North Maharashtra University in August 1990.
The year 1949 there were only 18 colleges affiliated to the University with a record of over 8000 students. Then colleges increased, and in 1994, the University had 41 post-graduate departments, 209 affiliated colleges and 118 recognized research institutions, with a record of 1,70,000 students for both under-graduate and post-graduate courses in different faculties.
