International Surgical Oncology
The Department of surgery offers surgeons a Surgical Oncology Fellowship International Year of fully trained outside the United States and Canada, who want more experience in surgical oncology. There is a significant opportunity to become well trained in the field of surgical oncology, as well as becoming a leader in the multidisciplinary care of the patient with cancer. The program began in 1992 and are more than 25 alumni.
Clinical training throughout the fellowship is divided into one month rotations and mentoring model. Fellows spend one to two months each on colorectal, gastric, Hepatopancreatobiliary/mixed Tumor, breast and chest services, as well as in the departments of pathology and Radiation Oncology.
Fellows are responsible for patient care preoperatively and postoperatively, and will perform surgical procedures under the supervision of an attending surgeon. They are exposed to about 200 major operative cases during the year. Fellows also participate in outpatient clinics, seminars, courses, rounds, journal club, and research conferences. They are responsible to help supervise and instruct residents and medical students.
There are conferences, wide and Department specific services that improve both clinical and research activities. Conferences of the Department include the weekly Grand Rounds, lectures on surgery and Oncology, a basic course in surgical oncology. There is also a weekly lecture series on topics related to surgical oncology, discussions of weekly services, research, conferences and a Conference run by dedicated fellow resident education. Fellows have access to all the conferences, which include up to 50 per week.
Areas of interest are discussed with each colleague at the beginning of the stock market. It is hoped that reading the background and preparation will lead to clinical research projects during the year. Science research projects are also available as there are active programs within the Department and institution.
