Calling was benchmarked and accredited academic institutions, President Pranab Mukherjee Saturday said universities should prepare the challenge posed by new models of dispensing knowledge - especially online courses.
Addressing the 64th annual convocation of Punjab University (PU) here, Mukherjee said that universities should be prepared to look at the future of dispensing knowledge.
"Higher education institutions would do well to recognize the new global trends that are creating new models of dispensing knowledge. Increased costs of higher education and the changing profile of education seekers, aided by technology, which has led courses line- massive open (Mooca).
"Because of its speed advantage of scale and efficiency, is fast catching as the preferred mode of learning. Blended Mooca - complemented by regular classroom instruction interaction online - also has the potential to gain ground," he Mukherjee said.
The president said pitching for academic institutions in the country to be accredited and benchmarked, should these institutions to raise awareness of quality.
"To pursue excellence, basic skills must be identified and cultivated centers of excellence. To create awareness of quality, each institution should be benchmarked and certified," he added.
"At the apex of the education system is the University. Indian universities have the potential to be the leading institutions in the world. Therefore, urgent improvements are needed in academic administration," said Mukherjee.
The president said universities should redefine teaching methodology to make it more effective.

"These can act as a model for socio-economic development opened," he said, adding that academic institutions should take active part in the recent initiatives such as 'Clean India' and 'Digital India' launched by the central government.
