Maharaja Institute of Technology is the oldest Polytechnic Institute in Kerala. Located in the heart of Thrissur, the polytechnic, evolved from military technology training center and it was established by Govt. India during the Second World War. In 1946, the training center has been named as Maharaja Institute of Technology in 1947-48 were started diploma courses in civil, mechanical and electrical engineering. Later, in 1991-92 and 1998-99 electronics and computer engineering diploma courses also began at this facility. When the Office of Technical Education was formed under the Govt. Kerala, the institution came under the administrative control of the Directorate.
Maharaja Institute of Technology - center of the Prime Minister of Technical Education in Kerala, the orientation of the rural people. Although the institute is located in the heart of Thrissur town, it is surrounded by a number of villages. This institution acts as a nodal Polytechnic Thrissur district, which has seven other polytechnics. The college has a hostel room for men, which attracts students from remote rural areas.
