The state of Haryana government decided to establish a medical school in Karnal in memory of the famous astronaut Kalpana Chawla later that belonged to Karnal.
In a review meeting in Chandigarh on Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College (KCMC), Haryana Chief Minister, Manohar Lal Khatt announced the construction of 100 acres of land KCMC Kutail town of Karnal districts.
Kalpana Chawla was the first Indian-American astronaut and the first Indian woman in space. Was among the seven astronauts who died tragically in the space shuttle Columbia. She was born in Karnal on July 1, 1961 as the youngest of four children.

Regarding the KCGMC, Sukhija said khattar had asked officials to expedite the work and complete it according to schedule. "The school with 100 seats will begin the session of 2016-17," Sukhija said, adding that want to incur Rs 645 crore and Rs 143 in KCGMC crore had been spent on it.
The Chief Minister further said that the building of the Medical University would be finished in four or five years. Khattar also aimed to widen the road adjacent to the KCGMC to solve the problem of traffic congestion.
