Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research [IGCAR], the second creation of the Department of Atomic Energy next to Bhabha Atomic Research Centre, was established at Kalpakkam, 80 km south of Chennai [MADRAS], in 1971 in order to conduct broad based multidisciplinary program of scientific research and advanced engineering directed towards the development of sodium cooled fast reactor technology fast [FBR] in India. This is part of the second phase of the Indian atomic energy program aimed at preparing the country for the use of large thorium reserves and providing meets the high demand for electricity in the XXI century.
The objectives of the meeting was to build a modest first sodium cooled fast reactor Fast Test [FBTR], with a nominal power of 40 MWt, based on the French reactor, Rapsodie. The reactor reached its first criticality on 18 October 1985 and has been running at its maximum power of 10.5 MWt achievable with a small core. It is the first of its kind in the world to use mixed plutonium uranium carbide fuel and driver.
Over the years, the center has established comprehensive R & D facilities covering the entire spectrum of FBR technology related to Sodium Technology, Reactor engineering, physics, computer applications metallurgy and materials, chemical materials and fuels, fuel reprocessing, reactor safety, control and instrumentation, etc. and has developed a solid foundation in a variety of disciplines related to this advanced technology.
With the knowledge and experience of successful operation FBTR, the Centre has embarked on the design and construction of 500 MWe prototype fast reactor fast [PFBR]. Several R & D in the areas of structural mechanics and thermal hydraulic flow induced vibration, component testing environment of high temperature sodium, sodium water reaction, development of sodium pumps etc. were persecuted and the design was completed. The PFBR is in advanced stages of construction and commissioning for BHAVINI. As part of efforts to close the fuel cycle, reactor fuel reprocessing plant is under construction quickly.

Apart thrust areas related to nuclear technology, the center has credentials as a leader in many research issues such as border issues and Quasi crystals, oxide superconductors, nano-structures, clusters, squid manufacturing programs, exopolymers and simulation experimental condensed matter using colloids etc. ....
IGCAR has extended its expertise and facilities to other vital sectors like defense, space and other industries in India for developing techniques for reliable solutions to specialized problems. It has collaborations with educational and R & D institutes like Indian Institutes of Technology, Indian Institute of Science, Pilani, Regional Engineering universities, national research laboratories, public units and institutes abroad.
