Recently announced two-year increase in age for 54 years as an eligibility criterion for all-India services exam including Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Forest Service (IFS) will be made applicable in the year and beyond.
Vacancies to be notified in the year ahead will follow new age criterion. These rules will not be the currently selected list of the year candidates. Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) looks after the selection of candidates for IAS, IPS and IFS from state services.
The move to increase the age limit came after a representation of some state services officers to the Supreme Court challenging 54 years of age criterion. They had put forward the idea of increasing the field maximum age of retirement in the state has increased from 58 to 60 years. The center had subsequently sought the views of state governments, cadre controlling authorities, ie the Ministry of Home Affairs, Ministry of Environment, forests and climate, state civil services, non-governmental civil services, state police and forest service officers and affiliation to the problem.
According to the official data provided by the government, there are 4619 IAS, IPS 3798 and 2668 IFS officers working against sanctioned strength 6270, 4728 and 3131 respectively.
