Government Engineering College, Idukki (GECHI) was established in 2000 under the management of technical education  - Government of Kerala. College is part of the Mahatma Gandhi University, , Kottayam and approved by all India Technical Education, New Delhi. 
The college started functioning in 2000 Paynavu government buildings, renovated for this purpose. Twenty-five acres of land in the vicinity of Kuyilimala Paynavu was transferred to the College for the construction of a permanent campus in August, the first batch of students of water were taken in November 2000.
Due to the delay in obtaining the approval of AICTE, and according to the order of the High Court of Kerala in three batches of college students were transferred to Institute of Technology Rajiv Gandhi, Kottayam in their last year.
AICTE team inspected the college in April 2003 and the approval was granted for the reception, 2003 - 2004. 
GECHI has 870 students in four games. Game of students admitted to the college in 2003, the first batch rolled out in October 2007.
The picturesque 25-acre (100,000 m2) campus is in Kuyilimala, Paynavu - headquarters district Idukki. The campus is located in a two-hour road from Thodupuzha or Kotamangalama (coordinates: 9 ° 50'52 "N 76 ° 56'32" E). The campus is located near the highway 33 states from Thodupuzha to Kattapana. Paynavu 120 km from Kochi and 130 km from Kottayam and is connected by bus to all parts of the state.

Cool and scenic surroundings Idukki Reserve, located in the immediate vicinity of the campus is ideal for the purpose of obtaining a higher education. Idukki dam is located 7 km from the campus.
