Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University Kanpur, has been on the map of higher education for more than three decades. Established in 1966, it has not looked back, now it has 170 affiliated colleges in 15 districts. Spread over a campus of 264 acres, the university Boomer with academic activities. While the undergraduate and post-graduate programs in all disciplines of art, science, commerce, law, engineering and medicine are offered in affiliated colleges and institutions, the residential wing of the campus includes faculties of Life Sciences, Business Management, Education and English. It also has a computer center, a department of adult and continuing education, communication and a College Development Council ... For catering to the needs of young engineering aspirants, the university has recently started an Institute of Engineering and Technology in the campus offering courses in four branches of engineering viz. Chemical, Computer Science and Information, the engineering industry in the first place. The university seeks to contribute to student learning through curriculum design, development of new courses and the application of a forward looking and innovative teaching methodology. Kanpur, industrial capital of up and commonly known as the Manchester of Northern India has had a very eventful history. It has contributed greatly to the growth and economic development in the country. Equally memorable and inspiring is its role in the first Indian War of Independence.
In modern times, the end of the 1800s, established the Society for the propagation of the gospel of Christ (SGPC) successfully classes of higher education in its schools in Kanpur. Gradually the demand for institutions of higher learning in the fast growing commercial Metropol took off. Arya Samaj, Sanatandharma and other missions and religious institutions opened such colleges under the encouraging patronage of the government. Agriculture College, Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Central Leather Institute, Textile Institute and Sugar Institute was also established during walking. Even after the establishment of these institutions fueled much desire for the people of Kanpur for a university, a real place of eminence and expertise to coordinate and update the work of the various educational institutions remained unfulfilled. In the mean time, several academic institutions with highly sophisticated resources and expertise sprung up in different parts of the country. Education and research has advanced by laps and bounds and Kanpur in comparison looked smaller than before at the same time an urgent need was felt by a large segment of the population in Kanpur for establishment of learning to meet their academic needs and provide leadership on social, economic , cultural and technological developments.
Radha Krishnan Commission (1949) proposed the creation of a university in Kanpur, as it was believed that Agra University, colleges in Kanpur were affiliated was getting increasingly overloaded. The popular demand and reduce the burden of Agra University Kanpur University was established by an act of the state legislature up in the year 1966 Since its inception, Kanpur University has made significant growth in the number of schools connected to it, and diversification and varieties of subjects taught. The university has made continuous efforts to improve and upgrade teaching facilities in its constituent and affiliated colleges.
