Located in one of the biggest industrial metropolis of State of Uttar Pradesh Kanpur. Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University stands as a hallmark of higher education. Chhatrapati Shahu Ji Maharaj University Kanpur, in terms of higher education for more than three decades. Founded in 1966, it has not looked back, now it has 170 affiliated colleges in 15 districts. Spreading over a campus of 264 acres, the university is booming with academic activities. While the undergraduate and graduate programs in all disciplines of Art, Science, Commerce, law, engineering and medicine programs are offered in affiliated colleges and institutions, the residential wing of the campus includes faculties life sciences, business management and English. It also has a computer center, a department of Adult and Continuing Education, Communication and a College Development Council ... To meet the needs of young aspiring engineers, the university has recently started an Institute of Engineering and Technology in campus offers courses in four branches of knowledge of chemical engineering, computer and Information, mechanical Engineering in the first instance. The University aims to contribute to student an education through curriculum design, development of new courses and the application of a forward and innovative teaching methodology. Kanpur, the industrial capital of U.P. and commonly known as the Manchester of Northern India has had an eventful history. He contributed much to the growth and economic development. Equally memorable and inspiring is its role in India's first war of independence.
In modern times, during the late nineteenth century, the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel of Christ (SGPC) has successfully introduced higher education classes in its schools in Kanpur. The demand for higher education institutions in the fast growing commercial metropolis gradually gained momentum. The Arya Samaj, Sanatandharma and other missions and denominational institutions opened these colleges under the encouraging patronage of the government. Agriculture College, Harcourt Butler Technological Institute, Central Institute of Leather, Textile Institute of sugar and Institute were also established in course of time. After India became free, other studies have been done in the field of education in Kanpur. Institutes of higher education, as Ganesh Shanker Vidyarthi Memorial Medical College and the Indian Institute of Technology were established.
Even after adjusting these institutions along cherished desire of the people of Kanpur for a university, a true eminence and excellence seat that could coordinate and update the work of the various educational institutions, remained unfulfilled. Meanwhile, several educational institutions developed many resources and expertise sprung up in different parts of the country. Education and research has progressed towers and bounds and Kanpur in comparison to the smaller air before, at the same time an urgent need was felt by a large segment of the population of Kanpur, for setting in apprenticeship that could meet their academic needs and provide leadership in the social, economic, cultural and technical fields.
Commission Radha Krishnan (1949) proposed the establishment of a university in Kanpur as it was felt that the Agra University to which affiliated colleges in Kanpur was getting more and more overloaded. To meet popular demand and reduce the burden of the University of Agra, Kanpur University was established by state law UP Legislature during the year 1966 Since its inception, the University of Kanpur has considerable growth in both the number of affiliated colleges with her, and diversification and varieties of subjects taught. Today it has 170 colleges spread over five districts of the state affiliates. About 2.75 Lac students appear every year in various level undergraduate and postgraduate examinations in the faculties of Arts, Commerce, Science, Education, Law, Agriculture, Medicine, Ayurvedic & Unani, engineering and technology, business management, science life and Higher Studies in Social Sciences etc. .. There is also a center of computer Application, Department of English and education.
The University has made constant efforts to improve and modernize education facilities in its constituent and affiliated colleges.
